Microsoft unveils SmartGlass technology

Thursday, 7 June 2012 00:47:33 BST

At this year's E3 conference in the US there have been a number of major revelations that have made an impact in the gaming industry.

However, it could be the announcement of advanced touch panel control system SmartGlass by Microsoft, which makes waves in more ways than one.

SmartGlass is superficially a service which will allow Microsoft to compete with Apple's AirPlay wireless streaming platform. It will effectively let people share content between their smartphones or tablets and their Xbox 360 console.

However, the ultimate aim is to also make it possible to use the touch panel display of a portable device to actually interact with games in real time.

While touch panel controls are hardly going to match the complexity or precision of a dedicated Xbox controller, the idea is that more people can join in with a more casual title, with simple interactions possible for those who are less concerned about lightening quick reflexes.

Of course Microsoft has been gradually implementing Xbox 360 controls via its Windows Phone mobile operating system, but the new touch based SmartGlass setup looks to be a much more comprehensive and evolved look at this technology, integrating a wider array of devices.
