Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 launched

Thursday, 16 February 2012 00:02:50 GMT

The first full sequel to the original Samsung Galaxy Tab has been launched in Prague and it has been given the sensible if obvious name of the Galaxy Tab 2.

It retains the same seven-inch display size of its predecessor but this time you get a dual-core 1GHz processor and the Android 4.0 operating system, which is far more powerful than older iterations of Google's platform.

While its touch panel may be smaller than that found on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 or the Apple iPad 2, it does give you enough screen real estate to compete with comparable rivals such as the Amazon Kindle Fire or HTC Flyer.

A three-megapixel camera on the back is complemented by a secondary camera for video calls mounted about the screen. It looks as if the arrangement of the cameras and the size of the touch panel will lead to the Galaxy Tab 2 being held in a portrait orientation like a smartphone, not landscape as with most larger tablets.

The Galaxy Tab 2 is more powerful in both software and hardware terms than its predecessor and its sleek, light chassis is definitely an improvement. Samsung will be hoping that this device can stand out in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
