Touch panel Kindle Fire sells 6 million units over Christmas 2011

Wednesday, 1 February 2012 13:24:34 GMT

The Amazon Kindle Fire tablet, which sports a seven inch touch panel display and is seen as a rival to the Apple iPad range despite their differences, was bought by six million people by the end of 2011, according to market analyst, Jordan Rohan.

The Kindle Fire only went on sale in the US on November 15th and has yet to be released in the UK, but strong sales would suggest that it has managed to capture the attention of a mainstream audience, thanks to its competitive price point, which is roughly half that of the entry-level iPad 2.

The original iPad sold 3.2 million in the first six weeks following its launch in 2010, although since the tablet market was virtually non-existent at the time, it is perhaps unsurprising that Amazon's device has been able to make more of its release window.

The iPad continues to outsell all other touch panel tablets, with 15.4 million shipped in the last three months of 2011. However, there is little doubt that Amazon is beginning to look like a worthy rival for Apple, provided the Kindle Fire continues its current sales surge.
