New iPhone touch panel to measure under four inches

Thursday, 1 September 2011 02:20:59 BST

The most recent leaks suggest that touch panel components for the iPhone 5 will measure between 3.5 and 3.7 inches across the diagonal, upsetting those who had hoped for a serious size increase.

Every iPhone so far has used a 3.5 inch touch panel display, although last year's iPhone 4 introduced a higher resolution across the same area to deliver crisper, sharper visuals.

Many had hoped that a four inch screen would be a key feature of the iPhone 5 so that it could compete with rival handsets from Samsung and HTC, where 4.3 inches is the common display size at the top end of the market.

Documents acquired by DigiTimes suggest that a four inch screen is not going to be present on the fifth iPhone, which could suggest that Apple is in fact leaving the overall design of the handset in tact from its predecessor and focusing on software and internal component updates.

Of course if a 3.7 inch touch panel is used then some aesthetic changes will be inevitable, but only the official launch will clarify matters.
